December 2015 Rig of the Month
December 1, 2015 Coleman Mcvea

I bought this rig in the summer of 2008. I found it in an old man’s yard in a little town called Peace River in the northern part of Alberta, Canada.  It had 114,000 kms when I bought it. ( and yes the speedometer is in KM/hr). I did a “frame up” restoration on it that took me 2 years to complete. The only modifications I did was the suspension and engine.  I wanted to keep it OEM as much as possible. The suspension has 3” Trail-Gear leaf springs mounted on 1” extended shackles from Low Range Off-Road.  I mounted some Doetsch Tech 3000 shocks that gives it an awesome ride.  The engine had good compression so did not require as much work.  I replace the cam with a torquer 260 cam along with all new rockers. I ported the intake manifold and installed a Weber 32/36 carburetor, with a Holly fuel regulator.  I also swapped out the exhaust manifold with a Low Range Off-Road stainless steel header.

I replaced the transmission with a new one and rebuilt the transfer case installing new seals and bearings from Low Range Off-Road.
The only thing I would change, if I had to do this again, would be to get Low Range to build me an engine so that the whole unit is new.
Future mods include; Spartan lockers front and back and getting a new engine build from the guys at Low Range.

All in all, this thing runs like it looks.  It’s like going to the Suzuki dealer and buying a brand new Sammy. The Trail-Gear leaf springs really give it a nice ride and it handles like a dream.  I wouldn’t change much on this as I love the whole thing as-is.
