My 1987 Suzuki Samurai
By Anthony Anderson
Nearly 3 years ago I bought this 1987 Samurai from an individual in Hurricane UT and he agreed to deliver it. That weekend his house caught fire and burned to the ground. The owner had several cars in the garage and had time to save just one. He chose to save my Samurai and lost his Trophy Truck build and a whole lot more.
When I first bought this Samurai it had a modest 2″ spring lift and a Myside Carburetor on the 1.3 Liter Engine.
These are the modifications that’s been done since I bought it:
- Toyota Spring Swap with Missing Link Shackles and a Spring Over Axle kit. Total 7.5″ of lift
- 4.16 T-case Gears
- 4.57 Differential Gears
- Front and Rear Spartan Lockers
- Heavy Duty Silverback Axles
- Low Range Full Sport Cage
- Corbeau Seats
- Custom Sliders
- Low Range Rear Bumper
- Diamond Plate Rocker Panels
I am currently in the middle of swapping in a 1.6L 16v Engine.
Once the engine swap is done I hope I can leave it alone for a while. But will eventually replace the stock front bumper with something that can take a beating.
One thing I like about it is that my wife enjoys taking her turn driving the Samurai. She is having more fun off-roading now and that’s what it’s all about.
Last Summer I competed in the Stock Class at The Old School Rock Crawl in Delta Utah. The Samurai did much better than anyone expected. With the expert spotting of Parker Jackson we were one of only 3 teams to make it through Course #8. We broke a few parts, welded it back together, and kept going all weekend.
